Should Helen Thomas have retired?

As a private citizen, isn't she allowed her personal opinion, no matter how inaccurate or offensive that comment may be?

Should one be forced to retire over expressing a personal opinion while not on the job? 

Doesn't this set a very dangerous precedent?
